12:10    A Businesslike Approach to Teaching Business English by Stephen Webster

Our business English students are often working people with little time, individual needs and unrealistic expectations! To help teachers balance the realities of learning a language with the demands of business students, I would like to propose an approach to Business English teaching which draws on a four-step management model. Its one that’s easy to apply in the classroom and it will appeal to your learners. Ill illustrate each step with real examples from the course book series Total Business and practical activities that you can use in the classroom tomorrow.

12:50    THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PUB QUIZ by David Evans

This quiz is an introduction to Heinle’s new series, English Explorer and Reading Explorer. It is a chance to test your knowledge of the people, places, creatures and cultures of the world. Using video, music, stories, images from National Geographic material, David Evans will show how you can bring the snowy wastes and steaming jungles of the world into your classroom!

13:30    Imaginative Grammar by Stephen Webster

Grammar is not something we normally associate with the imagination. Language lessons and course materials tend to present or clarify the grammar item and then offer restricted practice activities. But what happens if we letthe students go beyond that practice stage and apply their own imagination with the grammar? This workshop will set out to define the crucial role of imagination in learning and then explore some practical ways we can combine it with our grammar teaching.

14:30    Exploring Synergies Between Language Training and Professional Education by Slava Potapchouck

In this talk various ways are considered in which English-language teaching can be made more

meaningful to your students. In addition to a traditional way of bringing real-life examples into

your ELT classroom, an alternative method of bringing some English into professional education

is explored. Practical implications for teachers and students are examined. Examples of how

teaching materials from Cengage Learning can be used to this end are given, including distance

and computer-assisted learning. A model of Innovative Linguistic Resource Centers is described.

15:10    Putting LIFE into Reading Lessons by David Evans

The factors which affect our choice of reading texts for learners often seem to be in conflict. Teachers want texts which are authentic, challenging and content-rich but at the same time at a linguistic level which does not deter the learner. In addition, students will respond to texts which reflect their real life interests. In this workshop we'll look at how to resolve these conflicts and try out some practical activities which help learners to confront extensive and cognitively-demanding readings taken from National Geographic magazine.
